10 Things I Wish I Knew as a Fresher

A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step, says Lao Tzu, but that one step can be powerful if it is adequately informed. Here are ten things I wish I knew as a fresher

1. Nothing is the same: Campus life is completely different from what you are used to. You need new strategies for success, and every decision you make can build or destroy you.

2. Excellence starts from two places: Your mind, and the very first day:

“Believe you can and you’re halfway there.”

- Eleanor Roosevelt

Start on time and you will lay a good foundation for the coming semesters.

3. It is okay to take your time when choosing friends:

“Be slow to fall into friendship, but when thou art in, continue firm and constant.”

- Socrates

The friends you make on campus play a major role in shaping your experience here. Taking things nice and slow can help you make better decisions on the friends to keep.

4. Pay attention to your lecturers. They differ, and so do their teaching styles. Know what infuriates each one, what makes each one proud, their rules and regulations. It will keep you a step ahead of your class.

5. Missing a first class target for a session or two, does not equal game over. Every semester is a rematch, a chance to play again, but with more experience this time around.

6. Know your identity or others would define it for you. Know who you are and what you stand for (your values) and never trade them for anything.

7. Take responsibility for your life. Decide that things are not going to happen to you, you are going to happen to them. Study when you need to study, pray when you need to pray… never leave your life (and CGPA) to the hands of fate.

8. Always put God first. What will it profit a man if he has a first class and has no relationship with God. He holds the key to your destiny. Follow Him closely.

9. Laziness and procrastination are thieves! They will steal your joy, your grades and your success. Never put to tomorrow what you can do today.

10. Be open-minded: Anything is possible, so join good fellowships, associations and clubs that will help you learn more, grow your skills, and become a better you.
